BE Blogs: A Voice for Responsible Business

As part of our sustainability pledge to discuss best practices openly and honestly, we share insights that allow others to effect change in their community. While companies have responsibility to drive change internally, we believe they also can add to their insights and impact by sharing their experience with others.

SXSWeco 2012

BusinessEarth has had an exciting week at the SXSWeco Conference here in our home city of Austin, Texas.  Thousands of individuals from businesses, NGOs, governments, and more have interacted and discussed some of the biggest problems and opportunities that lie in sustainability.

There is far too much to cover in one post, but over the next few weeks and beyond, we’ll share all sorts of ideas and insights that we’ve come across at the conference.  So keep a look out for some really interesting stuff!

These are some of the main standout topics we look forward to sharing with you this month:

  • How to drive corporate sustainability intrapreneurship using internal incubators, etc.;
  • What it takes to get consumers and employees to make sustainable behavioral changes;
  • New tools that will allow companies and individuals to better manage their energy use;
  • Social media strategies for sustainable business;
  • How sustainable architecture and design can take cues from nature;
  • How to use “big data” to drive energy efficiency;
  • Why sustainability is still poised to be the most profitable business opportunity of our time;
  • And much more.

Follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our RSS feed to stay up on these topics and others, as we share more of what we learned at SXSWeco 2012.

8 Great Sites to Put Reuse to Use

Aug 10, 2010   //   by Colin Manuel   //   The Environment  //  No Comments

“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” There’s a reason that ‘Reuse‘ comes before ‘Recycle’. By putting old items to new use, you save energy and resources from being spent on a new item. Oftentimes, you can even make money in the process.

8 Great Sites for Reusing Old Items in New Ways

Here are eight great sites that you can reduce your environmental footprint by increasing your reuse:

  1. RecycleMatch – Buy, sell or recycle used materials
  2. RecycleThis – Discover new ways to use or recycle old items
  3. Habitat ReStores – Remodel your house with reuse
  4. Freecycle – Give and get the gift of reuse
  5. SuperUse – Get inspired by the masters of reuse design
  6. TechTurn – Sell and upgrade your computer systems
  7. iReuseHauling – Clear your “junk” with a clear conscience
  8. EcoSquid – Make money from your old mobile phone.

Some of these sites are in beta form and their services may not be available in your city. However, each one represents a business approach to solving an environmental problem.

The next time you think about throwing something in the trash, stop and think how you could reuse it. What are you doing to get new value from old items?
